Best Day Trips from Tokyo
Nikko — Ornate Shrines and Mountain Scenery (2 hrs)
Nikko is one of Japan’s most spectacular shrine complexes, set in mountain forest in Tochigi Prefecture. The Toshogu Shrine is UNESCO-listed and genuinely impressive. Best visited on a weekday to avoid crowds.
- Transport: Tobu Nikko Line from Asakusa (direct limited express, 1h50m, ¥2,720) or JR Nikko Line from Utsunomiya (via Shinkansen if you have JR Pass)
- Best for: History lovers, autumn foliage (mid-Oct to mid-Nov), photography
- Time needed: Full day — arrive by 9am, leave by 4pm
- Entry fees: Toshogu ¥1,300, Rinno-ji ¥400, Futarasan ¥300 — buy a combo pass at the entrance for better value
Kamakura — Giant Buddha and Coastal Temples (1 hr)
Kamakura is the easiest and most popular day trip from Tokyo. The famous 13-meter bronze Great Buddha (Kotoku-in) is the centerpiece, but the hiking trail connecting temples is just as good.

- Best for: First-timers, families, relaxed pace, beach in summer (Enoshima extension)
- Time needed: 5-7 hours is comfortable

Hakone — Mt Fuji Views and Hot Springs (1.5 hrs)
Hakone is the best day trip for Mt Fuji views and hot spring (onsen) experiences. Clear days offer iconic views across Lake Ashi with Fuji in the background. Weather-dependent — check the forecast the night before.

Day Trip Planning Tips
- Check first and last trains before committing — some routes have infrequent services in the evenings
- Weekdays are always better than weekends at popular spots like Nara, Kamakura, and Hakone
- Book activities in advance for Hakone ropeway, popular temple entry, and any guided tours
- Use your IC card for most day trip transport — buy any Shinkansen tickets separately at the station or on SmartEX app
- Luggage storage: Leave your bags at the hotel and travel light — coin lockers at stations cost ¥400-800/day
